Agata e Romeo
Via Carlo Alberto, 45, Rome, 00185 Italy
A refined, elegant place run by one family: Maria Antoinetta, who serves in the dining room; the expert maitre-sommelier, Romeo; and Agata, who is an excellent chef. The menu is seasonal: bass and mushroom ravioli, salmon roulade with a citrus mousse, salad with rabbit, pomegranate and radicchio, and the house speciality of pasta and broccoli in Brodo di Arzilla are just some of the dishes created by Agata. The desserts are delicious.

L'Archetto
Via dell'Archetto, 26, Rome, 00187 Italy

This spaghetti house is close to the Trevi fountain and Piazza Venezia. Romans know it for its excellent spaghetti and superb sauces, and the variously prepared 'bruschette' are also very good. The large variety of spaghetti dishes means they are divided into different categories with condiments such as pecorara, stuffed courgette flowers, clams, capers, white wine, fish etc. The Scozzese pizza is made with sausage and mushrooms, the Catanese with aubergines and there is also one made with ricotta cheese. Tourists tend to sit at tables outside in the shade, beside the fairly quiet street. Romans, on the other hand, prefer to eat inside. Go downstairs and you will find a cool and rustic basement with lots of tables.

A restaurant well known for its pleasant atmosphere and excellent, light Roman cooking. There are some really special dishes on the menu, like gnocchetti with green tomatoes or vermicelli pasta with beans and peas. For those watching their weight there are excellent salads, which don't lack flavour, like the salad with ovoli and truffles. The pie with anchovies and potatoes is recommended, as are the beef rolls stuffed with mushrooms (served in season). Desserts include cinnamon or ginger ice-cream. La Corte dei Volsci
Via dei Volsci, 103/107, Rome, 00185 Italy

Teachers and students from the nearby university department of psychology frequent this restaurant. The cuisine is quite creative - ravioli di spigola with white truffles or with crab for example. The speciality on Thursdays is gnocchi cooked directly in tomato sauce and made without flour. In winter, meat dishes are cooked over coals and there is plenty of polenta on offer. The desserts are made on the premises and are as good as everything else. The interior is attractive, created in an old warehouse. The restaurant offers a peaceful and quiet ambience.

Relais le Jardin de l'Hotel Lord Byron
Via G. De Notaris, 5, Rome, 00197 Italy
This restaurant is the only Relais & Chateaux in Rome. An elegant setting with two original rooms, one is the reconstruction of a winter garden, the other is smaller and more intimate. The service is high-class and the chef, Luigi Sforzelli, is meticulous in the presentation of his food, giving it the typical flavour of Trento.
The cuisine is good, and the menu varies according to the season. We can mention the edible boletus mushrooms seasoned with parsley-root, sea bream escalopes on a bed of boletus mushrooms with crispy algae and leek, and the roast red partridge with pine needles, accompanied by a timbale of barley and bilberries wrapped in gold leaf.
