Jazz & Image
Piazza della Navicella

Every summer, Villa Celimontana close to the Colosseum organises the jazz festival 'Jazz & Image', which harmonises the sounds of traditional and modern music with the beauty of the villa's surroundings. Italian and foreign musicians play at the festival with a high proportion of well-known artists, whether in jazz-pop, gospel, blues, trad jazz or any other type of music. The concerts are supported by other initiatives such as theme-related art exhibitions and side shows for new musical talents.

Classical Music

During the winter months, the Accademia di Santa Cecilia (tel 06 68 80 10 44, Via della Conciliazione 4) holds its music season in the Auditorio Pio, although concerts will take place in the new auditorium north of the city centre when it is completed in 2002. World-class international performers join the highly regarded Santa Cecilia orchestra directed by Myung-Whun Chung. Short festivals dedicated to a single composer feature in the autumn calendar. In June the orchestra and its guest stars move to the beautiful gardens of Villa Giulia for its summer concert series.

The Accademia Filarmonica Romana holds its season at the Teatro Olimpico. The academy was founded in 1821 and its members have included Rossini, Donizetti and Verdi. The programme mainly features chamber music, with some contemporary concerts and multimedia events.

From October to May, the Istituzione Universitaria dei Concerti (tel 06 361 00 51, Piazzale Aldo Moro) has recitals and chamber-music concerts in the Aula Magna of La Sapienza university. Check out the programme online at www.concertiiuc.it.

Teatro Ghione (tel 06 637 22 94, Via delle Fornaci 37), near St Peter's, has a varied programme of recitals often featuring major international opera stars. Visit online at www.ghione.it.

The Associazione Musicale Romana (tel 06 39 36 63 22, Via dei Banchi Vecchi 61) organises recitals and concerts in various locations throughout the year as well as two prestigious events: an international organ festival in September (in the Basilica di San Giovanni de' Fiorentini) and an international harpsichord festival in spring.

Free concerts are often held in many of Rome's churches, especially at Easter and around Christmas and New Year, with seats available on a first-come-first-served basis. The programmes are generally excellent. Sant'Ignazio in Loyola is a popular venue for choral masses as are the Pantheon and San Giovanni in Laterano. San Paolo Fuorile-Mura hosts an important choral mass on 25 January and a Te Deum is sung at the Gesù on 31 December. Details are published in daily newspapers, Roma C'è or Trovaroma.

Classical music festival: New Operafestival of Rome

This festival of classical music is held in the courtyard of the basilica of San Clemente al Colosseo, which is located halfway between the Colosseum and San Giovanni. The festival was first held in 1994. The beauty of the courtyard at sunset makes the concerts much more than simple performances. The programme offers works with the collaboration of famous international music academies. In parallel to the concerts, master classes are also organised by the festival. Call
