Abbey Theatre
One of the many Irish pubs in Rome.
The decor is utterly Irish-pub, with dark woods, a parquet that looks like it has seen it all, high stools at the bar, dark corners... During the afternoon, it's pretty quiet, but at night and during the weekend (when there is a football or rugby game in the British Isles), it's PACKED! The bar has many TVs where expats (and locals, during international competitions) can watch the game.
The bar staff is friendly and efficient, and the prices are on the expensive side, but if you need to have a Kilkenny or a Guinness,it's a nice place to have one!
I have a very nice memory of going to a chock-full Abbey just to watch a game Italy had to win during the European Football Championship... Italy's victory was just the cherry on top. It was awesome, but then again, there's nothing like watching a football game in Italy when the "Azzuri" are playing.
Via del Governo Vecchio, 51/53
Taverna del Campo
Piazza Campo dei Fiori, 16
The vineria itself was rather small--just a bar inside with a wide choice of wines--but the terrace was ample, and then, of course, people spilled out onto the piazza itself. At the bar, they tell you that if you don't want to drink out of plastic, you have to stay inside, so we opted for taste and hung out for a while on a small bench by the bar. If you ask me, the best thing about traveling in Europe is the wine--it's always really good, and always really cheap!
Cinque Dita
Via del Moro
Truly the best place in Rome if you like a relaxing atmosphere and chilled out tunes. And the most unique thing is that you get given some nibbles with your drink: biscuits for coffees and teas, crisps for cocktails and cokes.
This cafe/bar is worth a stop in after an evening stroll. Not only are you greeted by the friendly proprietor, but there'll be some great music waiting for you, and a huge menu. You can chose coffees, teas, fruit juices, spirits and mixers, or cocktails.
It's a bit of a hard find- look for some umbrellas on Via del Moro squashed into a tiny fenced off area to your left as you head away from the river. There's also a wooden sign marking this little golden nugget in Rome's bohemian meca.
The owner is a very sweet man who gives his time to people less fortunate. The times I was there he was helping out a man with psychiatric problems. So please come here- if only to support this lovely man and experience true Roman hospitality
