LocationOn the Splendide Royal hotel's 7th floor, where huge glass terrace doors open onto a view of breathtaking beauty. Il convivio Vicolo dei Soldati, 31. Il Convivio always maintains high standards of cuisine, service and wine making it one of the best restaurants in Rome. It is hard to describe the high standard and the variety of seasonal dishes in just a few words. However, meatballs with broccoli and seafood; aubergine roulade with cod, grapes and pine kernels; pumpkin flowers with porcini; and pigeon with lentils and kumquat are examples of the fabulous cuisine. The desserts include cream souffle with almonds and plums flavored with orange accompanied by a hot chocolate sauce or the semifreddo zabaglione with balsamic vinegar and warm fruit.
Romolo nel Giardino della Fornarina, Via di Porta Settimiana The cooking is typically Roman with lots of fried food, pastas, vegetables, cheeses and herbs. The wines are, of course, mostly Roman. The restaurant is housed in a 16th century building and is named after a love-affair that took place there. It is said that the artist Raphael met Margherita Luti here, a woman who became his model and with whom he fell in love. Margherita was nicknamed 'la Fornarina', being the daughter of a baker. Eating under the trees in this romantic setting is a delight. Gioia Mia, Via degli Avignonesi, Rome Don't be put off by the noise in this central and very pleasant pizzeria. There are classic pizzas and traditional Roman cuisine such as pasta cacio e pepe or the delicious pasta all'amatriciana and a limited choice of side vegetables lightly cooked with a little hot pepper (in the Roman tradition) as well as a good choice of wines to accompany your meal. L'Archetto, Via dell'Archetto, 26, Rome This spaghetti house is close to the Trevi fountain and Piazza Venezia. Romans know it for its excellent spaghetti and superb sauces, and the variously prepared 'bruschette' are also very good. The large variety of spaghetti dishes means they are divided into different categories with condiments such as pecorara, stuffed courgette flowers, clams, capers, white wine, fish etc. The Scozzese pizza is made with sausage and mushrooms, the Catanese with aubergines and there is also one made with ricotta cheese. Tourists tend to sit at tables outside in the shade, beside the fairly quiet street. Romans, on the other hand, prefer to eat inside. Go downstairs and you will find a cool and rustic basement with lots of tables. Hostaria La Botticella In the charming Leopardo alley, close to S.M Trastever in the heart of Trastevere , you'll find La Botticella home to the real Roman cuisine with its rigatoni alla paiata, la coda alla vaccinara, la trippa and la minestra di broccoli e Arzilla, as well as the jewish cuisine such as carciofi alla giudea (artichokes alla Judaic) and tortino d'alici (anchovy's pie). On the walls of the restaurant are bedazzling selections of photographs of Hollywood stars who have eaten at the home of Pasta Alfredo, who indulged themselves in the taste of the famous fettuccine in triple butter sauce, invented by the first-generation Alfredo. Other equally valid traditional specialties include mixed fried vegetables, rigatoni alla rigore ( a variation of amatriciana with ham) or one of the appetizing second courses consisting of both classic fish dishes and more imaginative creations like turbot alla duchessa ( with Zucchini, onion, and cherry tomato). Trattoria da Giggetto Via del Portico d'Ottavia, 21/a Rome, Italy 40 - 70 Euro In the shadow of the ancient Portico d'Ottavia, the age-old roots of Rome's Jewish community are still today firmly planted and respected. Checchino dal 1887 Via del Monte, 30 Testaccio Rome, Italy 45 - 70 Euro In Testaccio, the popular heart of Rome, is Checchino dal 1887, a restaurant that does more than justice to the local cuisine. For over a century, the recipes of the area have been based on the various elaborations of scrap meat from the nearby slaughterhouse, namely heart, liver, pagliata, tail, lung and all the offals of which the fat has been reduced, rendering the dishes pleasing to even the most delicate of palates. It's a humble cuisine, plebian and justly considered ingenious for its extraordinary capacity to ennoble the poor prime ingredients. Some examples of dishes are Rigatoni with pagliata, bucatini alla gricia, lamb alla cacciatore, accompanied by great wines from the very-well stocked cellar, dug out of the side of Monte Testaccio, an exceptional example of an artificial hill formed from the accumulation of broken ancient Roman amphorae.
Osteria dell Ingegno Pzza di Pietro, 45 Rome, Italy 35 - 50 Euro The restaurant Osteria dell'Ingegno is a chic, bistro-style restaurant in the splendid Piazza di Pietra characterized by its cozy design. Its name ( Osteria of Intelligence ) indicates the carefully thought-out cuisine and the degree of gastronomic research involved in the menu. The rich variety of dishes follows the seasons; enjoy a fish carpaccio ( raw or steamed, with spicy fruit mustard), elegant homemade pasta such as Ravioli with borage and ricotta, taglioni with fresh water shrimp and fish ragu, or tortelli with chestnuts and goat cheese in a red wine sauce.
La Terrazza dell'Eden Via Ludovis, 49 Rome, Italy 90 Euro Apart from the restaurant being one of the most prestigious in Rome, here you are also paying for a sensational view of the city as you stare across the skyline of Rome. Chef Enrico Derflingher, has prepared his masterpieces of Mediterranean lightness for the royal court of England and the Whitehouse. Its refined atmosphere is the perfect setting to fully savor the innovative and yet conceptually traditional cuisine created by a renowned Chef Tre Archi
Another reasonable find near Piazza Navona – and when I was there in late January of 2005, it seemed to be a haven for single Italian businessmen eating dinner early (early for Italians, anyway) at 8 p.m. There were five of them and me. So, if you’re looking for a restaurant where you’d feel comfortable eating alone, this is it. Small and cozy. The bread basket came with sliced Italian bread, breadsticks AND a panino – my favorite. These small, tasty, crusty bread rolls are almost hollow inside, and after I leave Italy, I crave them for months. In fact, I'm craving one right now! I ordered “carcioffi alla romana” Roman style artichokes (i.e. not fried like the traditional Jewish Roman cuisine). Very good – but an order of two was too much for one person. Then ravioli with ricotta and spinach and a tomato sauce – again, another good dish. Finally, the ricotta torta (cheese cake with chocolate chips) looked too good to pass up – it was! They warmed it in the oven and it was heavenly. Total bill only 19.5 Euros, including un quarto (one quarter liter) of house red wine, a half bottle of aqua frizzante (fizzy water), and un espresso. Quite a good deal so close to Piazza Navona. | Antica Osteria Rugantino: Cosy Inn in Trastevere An Osteria is a local neighbourhood Inn serving serving good roman cusine in plentiful proportions. We came across this one in Trastevere and enjoyed in so much we came back most nights. Well we always seemed to end up on this side of the Tiber in the evenings and there was a handy bus stop just nearby to get us back to our hotel. Price: US$11-20 Comparison: less expensive than average Address: 54 Via della Lungaretta - Just across the Ponte Cestio, not far from Piazza Piscinula, in Trastevere Ostaria del Gallo: Close to P. Navona, but a bit pricy
Osteria del Gallo (Gallo = Rooster) I tried the vegetable torta – two slices of a layered vegetable loaf, held together with an egg binding of sorts. Topped with a fresh tomato sauce. Very pretty and quite tasty. The veal “saltimbocca” (this literally means “jump in the mouth”) was delicious. Thin slices of veal with bay leaf and prosciutto in a lively lemon sauce. Great bread (lord, how I love Italian bread!) Still, a bit expensive for value received. I would have felt better if the bill had been about 6-8 Euros less than the 29E charged. Check out my tip on La Focaccia nearby which is more reasonably priced.

Take the first street to the right of the church (Via Tor Millina) and head east. At the second street, turn right. You’ll see del Gallo on the left. Phone: 06 - 687 - 3781. Hostaria Isidoro. The meal I had here is one of the top 10 meals of my life!!! It's nothing fancy, but it was surely memorable. A group of us from the hostel decided to take the advice of the owners of our hostel and try it out. It's not too far from the Colosseum although it's a bit tricky to find if you've had one too many limoncellos. Inside, you'll find a very welcoming family atmosphere and most of the people eating here seemed to be in large parties all seated at long tables and conversing loudly and happily. We had 8 people from the hostel and had an amazing time.
Trust me. Just look at the waiter and say, "assaggini." This means that you are ordering the house special which is an endless stream of pasta, pasta and more pasta. I was amazed at the variety of pastas that kept coming one after the other. Our table had already sampled various Italian alcoholic treats at the hostel before arriving so we were particularly joyous each time the waiter brought the next dish. We greeted him with "hip, hip hoorays" and I'm sure he thought we were nuts! Make sure you're hungry. Also, order the house red and keep it coming. It was a young and delicious wine the night we were there. Sorry, I don't remember the price, but it was probably around 25-35 Euros per person.
Address: Via San Giovanni al Laterno, 59 Directions: Colosseum Trattoria Da Bucatino: Bucatino all'Amatriciana. Another typical Roman "trattoria", but I would say this is the best one I've ever been to. My second time there was with Marit, maritagnes here on VT, a nice Norwegian lady and she said it was her best Italian meal ever. You can taste lots of typical Roman dishes, such as Bucatini all'Amatriciana, Pollo con peperoni, abbacchio allo scottadito and many others!
My favourite dish is, of course, Bucatini all'amatriciana. Bucatini are similar to spaghetti, but are much broader with a hole through the centre... The only problem is they're not as flexible as spaghetti so that it would be quite hard to wrap them round the fork!!!! So, if you want to avoid sauce all over your clothes and face, don't be shy and use your towel as a bib!!! Apart from this tricky part, it's a great experience!!!! Da Moschino: Trippa alla Romana! Da Moschino is a typical roman trattoria where you can find only a few dishes, changing day by day. If you go on Thursdays you can have gnocchi! They also have yummy home-made cakes. By the way, I heard the owner saying that if you want to eat a different cake you can bring one and eat it there!

Taverna del Campo This could be one of my favorite places in the world. It's nothing fancy, but the concept, and the food is amazing. It's located in campo dei Fiori, the inside is all brick. It features big barrels of peanuts and free olives, and cheese at the bar. There is also outdoor seating and a light food menu including delicious crostini, and panini. the wine is of course great too. This restaurant seems to be patronized by locals more than tourists, but the exceptional service is what really makes it stand out!
Two heavy, but wonderful (and typically Roman) dishes were the spaghetti alla carbonara and the saltimbocca. The bacon was so flavorful. Hostaria Costanza: Romantic Dining in the Ruins of Pompey's Theater This fascinating and charming restaurant is one of my favorites. It's built on the ruins of the Theater of Pompey, near where Julius Caesar was murdered -- you can see some of the old walls inside the restaurant. The food is excellent, and while not cheap, is not overpriced for what they offer. Very cozy and romantic place. Be sure to ask for their brochure which explains the history. Closed Sunday.

A very nice dining experience - quite reasonably priced especially given it’s wonderful location. I had a very fresh green salad with radicchio, then risotto with funghi porcini and I ate every bit of it. The owner and I had a brief conversation (I really appreciate the opportunity to try out my Italian on any unsuspecting native). I explained that I was eating early and in a hurry in order to get to Santa Maria Sopra Minerva early for a concert that started at 8:30 p.m. (My VT friend in Rome, Abarbieri – Antonio – had warned me to get there an hour early to get a good seat – and he was right!) The owner was curious about the concert and I explained what I knew about it. Just a few words exchanged, really – and a few minutes later, he very kindly brought me a gift - a Limoncello in a beautiful yellow and green glass. For those of you who haven’t ever had the pleasure, Limoncello is ambrosia of the gods – an after dinner drink, served cold (I keep mine in the freezer) infused with lemon peel that is so utterly refreshing you’ll think you’re on a terrace in Amalfi, overlooking the Mediterranean. I am always amazed at the kindness of people in Rome in the tourist industry. This gentleman sees hundreds of tourists every day, and yet he went out of his way to offer a kindness to someone who, as far as he knows, he will never see again. It’s enough to melt the icy, overly suspicious, hand-on-your-wallet attitude that you sometimes need to travel with. Back to the dinner. Total cost, about 20E. Really amazingly reasonable given that you’re right on Piazza della Rotunda, looking at della Porta’s fountain and Hadrian’s Pantheon. On a warmer, non-rainy night, I can’t think of many places I’d rather be for a late night dinner in Rome.
Risotto is my favorate dish at ANY Italian restaurant, and it was pretty good here, too. Otello alla Concordia: Delizioso homestyle eats from mama Pia!
This place is my favorite in all of Italy. If you're traveling near the Spanish Steps, head down via della Croce, and wander in under the Vespa-lined entry. If it is a nice day, dine outside under the shade of the ancient tree, with it's broad leaves that make a "roof" for this area. Pia is the sweet woman you'll find sitting at the desk in the outdoor seating area. She can tell you great stories about the days when film director Federico Fellini frequented this family establishment. By the way, the food is fantastico!
Orecchiette alle erbe, or any of the pasta and sauces were incredible. I had to go back for another visit during my trip. Catution: once you eat authentic Italian food like this, you'll find it hard to enjoy Italian in American restaurants...even if you live in a place like Chicago, like me. This is a historic bar in the centre of Testaccio with an eclectic mix of music, drinks and décor. It's part bar, part music venue and part gallery space, with local painters and photographers getting to display their work on the walls. Pretty cool for a casual night out. Theme: Other Address: 35 Via Monte Testaccio The Drunken Ship: The Drunken Ship
Most popular bar on the Campo with a modish design that distinguishes it from other more classical venues. It's the place to go if, you don't mind being around some tourists. A great location right on the piazza, DJs most evenings and happy hour from 5-8pm. The Vineria, right in the middle of Campo de’ Fiori, is still very ‘in’ and makes a perfect rendez vous for an early evening drink. Customers range from well-known actors to local winos, although lately the atmosphere has become a little more wannabe. Il Nolano at number 11 is as good for people-watching and always less packed. Just a few doors down at number 20 is the Drunken Ship, good for those in search of English-speaking ex-pats and tourists. Equally popular but rather more refined is Antico Caffè della Pace, Via della Pace 5, close to Piazza Navona. The cosy interior is adorned with antiques, while the ivy-clad façade looks onto a notoriously popular summer terrace. For a romantic pre-dinner aperitif, take a table at Caffè di Marzio, Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere 15, and enjoy a glass of wine overlooking this delightful piazza in the heart of Trastevere. Antico Caffe Della Pace: A great cafe: Antico Caffe Della Pace
Antico Caffe della Pace is a lovely cafe very near Piazza Navona. Located on a narrow but colorful side street, it's a great place to have a leisurely lunch and watch the people stroll by. We sat at the outdoor patio for the best view. I've heard this restaurant described as upscale, but at lunchtime it's a casual environment. We thought that this was one of the most charming and memorable places that we ate while in Rome.
I loved the ham & mozzarella panini. The salads here were also wonderful! Price: US$11-20 Address: Via della Pace 3-7 - Situated two blocks from Piazza Navona and in front of a gorgeous church (Santa Maria della Pace). Radio Londra Caffe: Good Nightclub This place is one of those "slash" places. Part restaurant / bar / pub / club. Whatever you want to call it, it is a good time. This place was jam packed with a bunch of crazy Italians and tourists. Thats what my guidebook said, thats what it was. They have drink specials late into the night, which I found other clubs did not do. The snack food was not worrth writing home about. Give it a pass by eating before you go out. Also, they will try and make you buy a "membership" pass for the year, for 5 Euro. If you aren't too big of a group, I am sure that you will be able to talk your way out of it like we did. Blues café!: They all knew to find this place... We needed a little break after we visited the vatican museum and the sistine chapel before heading to the 'San Pietro in Vaticano'. I know Blues café doesn't sound too good. But they had a terrace with 2 tables , the sandwishes looked attractive and tasted even better. Christa enjoyed her way to strong Italian coffe (which she ruined with hot water) and Free's panini tasted georgeous as well. What more would a person wish for. Seems like all the neighbouring shops knew this address as well. At some moments the bar was more looking like a take away. Tazza d'Oro is known as Rome's "house of coffee", and I have read that it is supposed to have the city's best coffee. Located just across the Piazza from the Pantheon, it is the perfect place to stop off for a quick espresso mid site-seeing.
For a famous Roman institution, their coffee sure is cheap. If you have a espresso standing at the bar it is only costs 65 euro cents! Just go and pay at the cash register first and then present your docket to the barista Price: less than US$10 Address: Via degli Orfani, 84 (Pantheon) - just off Piazza della Rotonda Phone: 39 06 6789792 Website: http://www.tazzadorocoffeeshop.com/homeeng.htm email: info@tazzadorocoffeeshop
Tips for Coffee When you order a coffee it is normal to leave 5 or 10 cents as a tip with the receipt when you put it down on the counter. 5 or 10 cents is enough, as untiol 3 years ago it was nromal to leave 100 or 200 lire, so it is fine. Don't start big tipping as it only makes people then expect those big fat tips all the time. In Rome it is more a courtesy than an expected sort of thing. In Florence, you almost never see anyone tip for a caffee. Caffe Tazza d'Oro: Granita
Caffe' Tazza d'Oro (which translates to "Cup of Gold") is often cited as the best coffee in Rome and it is definitely worth trying out for yourself. As is true at all italian caffes, pay first and then take your reciept to the counter to get your food/beverage.
The thing to get is the coffee granita. Granita is an iced drink that comes in different flavors, but most often coffee, lemon or orange. At Tazza d'Oro, you will get a mixture of crushed ice and espresso topped off with some of the thickest cream I have ever come in contact with. The best way to eat it is to mix the cream into the ice/espresso part. But be warned: the cup may look small, but this is one of the most intense coffee drinks I've ever had and rarely was I able to finish it! Price: less than US$10 Address: Via degli Orfani 84 - With your back to the Pantheon, Tazza d'Oro is off the right-diagonal corner. It has big yellow letters above the entrance.
Vineria Vineria Il Chianti: Excellent place right next to Fontana di Trevi
The "Vineria Il Chianti" is an excellent place for those who look for a very good yet affordable meal close to one of the main attractions. We went there with a group of seven students. The menu offers the standard dishes (pizza, pasta, meats), with a couple of interesting variants. Our pizzas and pasta dishes were just excellent, and a friend was VERY envious of the steak served at the table next to us. Their specialty is Tuscan cuisine. The wine card offers a huge selection of wines in all price ranges (unfortunately I cannot give a qualified judgement about the quality). For us (due to our budget) the house wine did just fine (€ 9/bottle). The restaurant probably has about 100 seats with a very comfortable and "local" ambience. The whole place is decorated with shelves with wine bottles, the excellent english-speaking staff is very polite. Every single one of us more than just enjoyed his/her meal, it was just excellent and among the best we ate during our stay. [The price given is for the more affordable variant. Of course one can easily reach other categories.] Price: US$11-20 Comparison: about average Address: Via del Lavatore 81/82a, The street is right off the square that Fontana di Trevi can be found on Phone: 06 678 75 50

This is a very old and well known simple place, open only for lunch, located not far the Pantheon. The menu is always the same, but here you can really enjoy local recepies. This is the italian version of a fast food and the service can be occasionally rude if they need your table for someone waiting in line. Very simple decor, no wine list and no table cloth. Closed for dinner and on sunday

The dining room is welcoming and refined, with walls in tomato-red and dark wood. Pizzeria FiorFiore: Piazza a Taglio (sliced Pizza) Very Roman!!
This old bakery place, was turned into one of the busiest place in the Spanish Steps area, especially at lunch time, where you can get one of the best Pizza a Taglio in town.Other then the very simple options(tomato souce only, tomato & mozzarella) you also have several toppings available. The place is not huge, but there are few tables inside and outside. Salads and drinks also served. The staff is very fast and overall professional. Favorite Pizza are: Broccoletti e salsicce Funghi e mozzarella but they are all very good and served as soon as they get out of the oven.If you like it "HOT" there is some chilly peppers self service. In summer time they also have good home made ice cream. If the lines outside are to be trusted, it is the best, or at least the best publicized. We decided we had to try and we thrilled that it would be a cheap dinner. The pizza was excellent and the brushetta just enough to knock off the edge of hunger after a long day of exploring. The place is TINY and so to have five people at a table was crammed. The staff was rushed and the table fee higher than usual. Still, it was a fun experience and worth a little wait.

Speciality Tartuffo
I am not sure whether it is a local customs tip or a tip for tourists... I didn't know how to place it better. Have a Tartuffo ice cream on Piazza Navona!! There is one café directly at the middle fountain where you get your Tartuffo for 5,50 Euro. You can sit outside and observe the many people on the Piazza. In other cafés the Tartuffo is more expensive. So take a look at the menu. Tartuffo is an excellent chocolate ice cream with chocolate pieces. It tastes a bit like mousse au chocolat but frozen. Unfortunately I didn't take any picture. Fragolino!
Disgusted by the Pepsi and wine suggestion I listed earlier? I don't blame you. But this one is good, I swear. Fragolino is a type of wine that tastes heavily of strawberries (I was told that the grapes are grown in the same field as strawberries, thus giving them a distinct strawberry flavor). It's meant as a dessert wine and is quite sweet. It comes in either red or white variations. Restaurants don't always serve it, but you can buy it at many wine shops in Rome.
La Focaccia: Near Piazza Navona, but without the High Prices
Under the gaze of Santa Maria della Pace, you'll find the charming and cozy restaurant La Focaccia. As it was just around the corner from my friends' apartment, we ate there several times, and were never disappointed. If you long to get away from the noise and bustle of Piazza Navona, this is the place for you. Reasonable prices, an incredibly extensive menu, and wonderfully prepared fresh food. The waiters were helpful and speak English, and the menu is translated into English. Sitting outside was delightful, but the interior rooms were so charming, especially those downstairs - we didn't even mind when the outdoor tables were filled.
Wonderful "suppli" which are rice balls, stuffed with scamorza - a tasty smoked cheese, then deep fried. Potato croquettes. Delicious salads (I love the Ischia). Eggplant rollini with mozzarella cheese and tomatoes. Pizzas. Bruschetta (pronounced "broo SKET tah"). And, of course, focaccia. My favorite was the onion. You can create your own pizza if you wish and they'll cook it in their wood fired oven.

Turn right on Via della Pace. http://www.1stmuse.com/focaccia/index-e.htm Dessert Cremolati San Barbara!: For dessert only.... One evening we were walking , not going to any direction. We were searching were the light and the noise came from. Well the noise was a fantastic choir in the sizzling hot church of San Barbara. (the choir's name was 'officina Musicae - and it was a sunday evening...;-)) But the doors were wide open , and some chairs were waiting for us to rest our tired feet. Those chairs belonged to 'San Barbara Cremolati'. Frozen yoghurt , pancakes in a lot of flavours... 'cremolato' is a fruit flavored ice-water made with real fruit. (I didn't liked the mint) I watched facinated how he made the square pancakes and chose the one with créme de chesnut and Grand Marnier. I even managed to choose even a richer one for my mate...with chocolate mousse and banana's. Pancake San Barbara. Hmmmm , music and pancakes. I'll never forget. Just off Piazza della Rotonda, this ice-cream parlor is not the best in Rome, although it’s in the top 5, but it has the most extensive chocolate selection (chocolate, truffle, orange-chocolate, milky-way, sacher torte…)! Getting into a gellataria is like entering a dream… there are so many flavours to choose from (I thought it was 50 but just read it was more like a 100!!!) and with flavors unknown to foreigners. yummy!!! They also serves sandwiches, coffee and sodas. And for those who don't know Italian, no problem! Della Palma has an original way to display the flavor. For instance, the tangerine ice-cream tray has tangerines on top, the Milky Way flavour has a broken candy bar, etc.
My favourites are tangerine with orange-chocolate, sacher-torte and pistachio, limoncello (lemon liqueur typical from Italy) and coconut, Rafaello and tiramisu … Price: less than US$10 Address: Via della Maddalena. 20 Directions: North of Pantheon

-Taverna della Scala Piazza della Scala, 19 T: 065814100
In the heart of Trastevere, the center of old Rome, Taverna della Scala occupies a perfect spot for observing Roman nightlife. Like many quality Italian restaurants, the décor is minimal. The outdoor tables are covered in green-and-white checkered cloths. It does not detract from the food.
Bruschetta is simply grilled bread, rubbed with garlic and covered with perfectly ripe tomatoes. No more, no less. The pasta with lobster was bathed in a delicate tomato sauce. Porcini mushrooms were lightly sautéed in olive oil and a touch of garlic to bring out their earthy flavor. After dinner, a glass of limoncello, a bracing lemon liqueur, is an appropriate digestif.
-Toto alle Carrozze Via delle Carrozze, 10 00187 Roma T: 06-67-85-558
Shopping on the Via Condotti is an experience. The array of shops loaded with fine clothing and leather goods is astonishing. Walking along the cobbled streets bearing all those packages can make you hungry. Stop for lunch at Toto, not far from the Spanish Steps. Wait for a table outside and watch the mix of tourists and locals passing by.
The starter of a fritto misto of anchovies and zucchini was so good. The anchovies nothing like the mushy, salty mess in the can. You could really taste the flavor of the fish. The veal cutlet came with a rich wine sauce and roasted potatoes. The tagliolini pomodoretti was al dente noodles with a light tomato sauce. The tiramisu and vanilla gelato with fresh berries were perfect endings to a savory meal.

Osteria del Pesce Rome
The owners of Osteria del Pesce, themselves former fishermen, travel an hour from Rome every afternoon to the fishing village of Terracina to handpick the best of the day's catch. The chosen lobsters, clams, and red snappers are then showcased as a culinary "installation" on ice before being served at dinner in this simple, open space off the Piazza Farnese. Sea bass carpaccio, oysters, and langoustines precede a light risotto with zucchini and baby shrimp, a perfectly al dente spaghetti alle vongole with a subtle briny undercurrent, and tender calamari. If you have room, try the grilled red snapper seasoned with parsley and a hint of red chili. The fine wine list emphasizes whites. After your meal, enjoy a late-evening passeggiata in the nearby Campo dei Fiori. And note that the clientele are hip, and dress the part (39-06-686-5617; entrées, $18-$42). Typical Products |
| Parmigiano Reggiano has existed since ancient times, and is made from the milk of cows of Emilia-Romagna. It is sold by weight, and purists prefer to buy it cut in thin slices rather than grated. Reggiano should not be confused with industrially-produced variety, the padano, or with the prcorino romano, a slightly spiced and very salty goat's cheese. |

| Italy's 180 million olive trees produce 624,200 tonnes of olive oil every year. These are graded into different categories, according to EU regulation. The best oil is calles 'extra virgin' (olio extra vergine di oliva) and is pressed out of the olives at room temperature, just like a fruit juice; to be refined, it needs to be heated. If added to olive oils, it becomes plain olive oil. Italian extra virgin olive oil is also reputed for its extensive health benefits. |

| The mozzarella produced in most dairies today is made with cow's milk and has little taste. By far the best type of mozzarella is the mozzarella di Bufala (made from buffalo milk), which owes its taste to the briny nature of Agro Pontino, an area of marchland to the south of Rome. This delicate cheese can't be kept long, and is delicious on pizzas, or eaten with tomatoes, or prosciutto. |
